Yahoo ranks number 2 for online video from Nielson Online VideoCensus report.  Despite the assault of negative news and deteriorating share value, Yahoo proves to be making some progress on some fronts and still is popular destination site for users.  Yahoo continues to focus on products to gain traction with users and apparently working in video with live video, on demand, and original content.  Yahoo has focused on quality of content or quantity and is proving to be more valuable strategy.

Video streams on Yahoo! dramatically increased in September to 265 million, up 56 percent from August’s 169 million.  The new traffic puts Yahoo! ahead of *Fox Interactive, which had been number two to YouTube.  Monthly video streams on YouTube have broken the astounding five billion mark with 5.3 billion streams, up 12 percent, according to unpublished results provided by Nielsen Online to Beet.TV.

YouTube still is the dominate source of video among internet users.  People still watch twenty times more videos on YouTube than on Yahoo.  YouTube adds significantly number of streams in September alone (592 million) was more than twice as many as Yahoo’s total stream count. YouTube also has a bigger overall audience (81.9 million unique viewers) compared to 29.9M for Yahoo.

Yahoo maybe lead in ability to generate revenues from video as it places ads more effectively on video content.  Also, Yahoo has attributed the growth to contextual placement of the videos and traffic due to major news events. Yahoo had record traffic for Yahoo Finance and Yahoo News in September 2008.  Yahoo will likely benefit in months ahead as trends continue and strategy focused on video content proves more effective.
