Verizon Partners with Google for Mobile Search

Verizon is partnering with Google to address mobile search and advertising revenues. The WSJ reported on the developing agreement between the companies on the deal that would be a major boost in the nascent market for mobile search and advertising. Large carriers have been cautious on ceding their terrain in wireless content industry after their experience with ISP and Internet companies dominated content industry and revenues from advertising. The development highlights the large carriers’ failure to develop technology competitive to large Internet companies. Also the importance of search and Google’s dominance and ability to derive higher revenues through search and search lead advertising.

Verizon will be able to simply search on their mobile device offering and generate revenues through advertising. As Internet access becomes available on mobile phones, users will access content through search and advertising will be a significant source of revenues for carriers. Carriers will benefit by partnering with more experienced and proven Internet companies that will deliver solutions that will better address their needs for consumers that developing technologies on their own.

Google has managed to take an early lead in mobile Web search market, just as it became the dominant search engine on Personal computers. From the 16.7 million who say they use mobile search, about 63% say they use Google, 34% say they use Yahoo, while only 25% say they use carriers’ services, according to comScore M:Metrics Inc.

 

Currently, Google is default search engine on the Apple iPhone. AT&T intends to use Yahoo Mobile search for its MEdia Net portal. Recently, Sprint Nextel partnered with Google for the default search for 40 of their phones. The deal with Sprint provides revenue share from ad displayed search results.
