The Friend Thing

The FriendFeed is getting really friendly. The service allows you to tweet and share other apps with your friends. FriendFeed recently added search into the mix which make it even more appealing. The Friend Feed concept is similar to the personal news feed on facebook. FriendFeed runs on a number of applications and is not tied to single platform. It is probably a convenient way to keep in touch with your friends across a number of different applications: youtube, flicker, twitter, yelp. This would be great to post and follow on a single app without too much headache. The Search application turns the aggregated feeds into a destination and piggy backs on the widely used applications as its own. I think this is pretty brilliant business model.

The model is hyper viral in the ability to ride on other applications that are viral in nature as well. It is in a sense, a master widget for other widgets. You are able to follow friends interest related to applications that are integrate into friend feed and you have your own feed for others to follow. The relevant feeds are available on various pages. . Also everyone posting allows you to see what in going on in the world and the ability to search feeds notches it up a little more. It is a search engine in reverse of friends and interest that becomes searchable. Obviously rich data is produced and can be mined for valuable information attractive to advertisers and marketers.

Friendfeed really allows you to get friendly with others without too much effort. Most of the interesting applications that most people use are on the feeds available and more likely as well. The company solves a number of the problems and takes the flexibility to another level. You are no longer limited to a single platform or tied down to anything.

The guys behind frinedfeed are from Google. The guys are the same as the ones that brought gmail, ad sesnse, groups, and maps which are quite popular, useful, and probably better than other competing applications. They know how to make good products when launched and even make them better over time. So you can likely expect more good things to come from Friendfeed. Friendfeed recently announced 5M funding from Benchmark in Feb.

FriendFeed is designed to make all the sites you use a little more social and a little more useful.

“One of the benefits of the Open Web and Atom/RSS feeds is that you don’t need to choose a single service for all your needs. FriendFeed is built with that philosophy in mind.”
