By AZAM on March 7, 2008The Apple iPhone is considered the main hyped device and holds the potential to change the wireless industry. The competition downplayed the impact and derided the device as lacking. At the same time, the completion is working hard to address the answer to the iPhone. The proverbial phrase imitation is the best form of flattery comes to mind. Apple announced opening up the iPhone for developers to build applications for the device. Interestingly a number of firms have already built applications designed to work on the device even before Apple provided SDK kit to make the application run smoother on device. In addition, Apple announced that the iPhone would be better designed for corporate users and IT department in mind: ability to synch with Microsoft Exchange ActivSych.
The iPhone’s new business application and capabilities will allow business users to receive corporate “push ” emails, contacts, and calendar information from Microsoft Exchange, one of the world’s most widely used business communications software suites. At the same time, Apple has taken steps to increase security with ability to lock and erase the system remotely in the event of loss or theft.
“The majority of the objections I.T. managers have had about the iPhone have been addressed today,” said Van L. Baker, an analyst with Gartner Inc., referring to corporate information technology managers. “It’s a very valid and robust device, and for that reason it’s a viable platform for the enterprise in competition with the BlackBerry and others.”
“Developers, Developers, Developers” Quote from Monkey Boy
Apple opened up the iPhone to developers with a launch of the SDK kit. The ability to develop application on the iPhone will have a positive impact on the device and future. The device is considered very user friendly touch screen and well designed form & function, and the iPhone offers arguably the best internet experience from any mobile device. In fact, the device is considered “game changing” in the way people will experience the web on a mobile device.
Some developers have already worked to develop applications with SDK specific for the iPhone. Electronic Arts and Salesforce presented application developed at the recent announcement of the developer kit. Electronic Arts showed its upcoming game Spore developed for the iPhone which will likely benefit from the gaming community. Salesforce showcased its popular enterprise application that will likely lead to more business applications targeting use on the iPhone. The iPhone stands to benefit from the increased interest of developers based the user experience on the iphone and increasing popularity of device among and increasing user base.
The iPhone has been show a market success in the category of smart phones within a short period of time since its launch. Currently, Apple is the number 2 and 3 smart phone in the US and the world. Apple earned 6.5 percent of the worldwide converged device market, far behind the world leader Nokia (52.9 percent) and second place Research in Motion (11.4 percent) and just ahead of Motorola (6.5 percent) from Canalys analysis estimates.
According to Canalys estimates that Apple took 28% share of the fast growing US converged device market in Q4 2007, behind RIM’s 41%, way ahead of third placed Palm on 9%. Also, the numbers was enough to put Apple ahead of all Windows Mobile device vendors combined, whose share was 21% in the quarter according to Canalys figures.
Apple has set a target of reaching 10 M phone by the need of the year. With the recent addition of the corporate market and expansion plans in the international markets (India & China) the goal does not seem a goal too hard to reach. Analysts were previously concerned about the rate of sales and discrepancy of inventory and subscription at carrier partners.
Vote of Confidence
The Apple iPhone received strong backing for the platform’s potential from KPCB Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, the same firm that backed Google, Amazon, Electronic Arts among others successful Tech & Internet companies. John Doerr announced a dedicated fund of 100M (iFund) for funding companies developing software and applications based on the iPhone.
“[With the iPhone] you have something that’s in your pocket that’s broadband and connected all the time,” said John Doerr, a partner at KPCB. “It knows who you are and where you are. That’s a big deal. It’s bigger than the personal computer.”
